Sedation Options
The three main forms of pediatric sedation include oral sedation, nitrous oxide & intravenous sedation. Your child’s dentist will determine which form is necessary based on the situation.
Oral Sedation is delivered orally. Oral sedation won’t put the child to sleep but will assist in keeping them calm and in a relaxed state.
Nitrous Oxide, also called laughing gas, will also helps keep children calm. A mask will be applied over the child’s nose so that a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen can be delivered and inhaled. Within a short time, span, normally 5 minutes, the child will be relaxed and euphoric. Once the dental procedure is over, unadulterated oxygen will be administered to the child to bring them out of their sedated state while also clearing out any lingering nitrous oxide.
Intravenous Sedation, or general anesthesia, is the strongest form of pediatric sedation available and will be delivered through an IV into the child’s vein. This will result in a child who is sleeping for the procedure. It’s carefully and closely controlled to ensure maximum safety. Once the procedure is over, the anesthesia will be gradually lessened to slowly bring the child out of his or her sedated state in a safe manner.
Pediatric dental sedation is proven to be safe and hassle-free for any pediatric patient in need. With clear communication between parent and dentist, all options can be reviewed so that the best one is selected for the dental procedure.
