What Types of Emergency Dental Treatment do Children Most Often Need?

Dr. Sona Isharani is a dentist in Greensboro, NC, specially trained to care for children from infancy to the teenage years. Here she lists out the emergency dental treatment offered at Triad Pediatric Dentistry.

What Types of Emergency Dental Treatment do Children Most Often Need?

Chipped or broken tooth

It is usual for children to break a tooth during their childhood. It could be from playing a sport, falling, or plain bad luck.

Call your dentist when this happens, as your child will need immediate treatment. The treatment depends on the impact and size of the fracture.

Dental avulsion

Trauma, such as being hit in the mouth with a baseball, causes dental avulsions or knocked-out teeth.

If this happens, try to find the tooth and bring it along to the dentist. It is essential to take care of the tooth and not touch the roots. You can also preserve the tooth by putting it in milk to maintain its moisture. Your best bet is to take care of it and get to your emergency pediatric dentist ASAP.

Tooth displacement

Your child might have a tooth that is partially or entirely knocked out due to an accident. You will notice that the tooth is now at an unnatural angle or only partially in its socket.

Baby teeth usually resolve this issue. However, if your child has permanent teeth that are not functioning correctly, a pediatric dentist should see them immediately.

Dental injection to the jawbone

A severe injury to the face can cause a tooth or two to push into the jawbone. That could lead to damage to the ligament. Sometimes immediate root canal treatment will be necessary for your child.

Root fracture

If your child sustains an injury to their jaws, it is a good idea to bring them in for treatment. To determine if your child has a root fracture, the pediatric dentist will perform x-rays and treat it accordingly.

Dental abscess

A dental abscess is another emergency that could occur at the tooth’s root. An infection in the root of a tooth can cause severe pain and discomfort.

Consult your pediatric dentist immediately for relief and treatment.
