Sedation Dentist for Children
Telling your young ones what to expect at the dentist isn’t enough to ease their fear of an upcoming appointment. For some children, informing them of what is about to happen and showing them how it will be done is enough to ease their nerves. When this is not enough, sedation dentistry can be an option. Dr. Isharani offers sedation options, including nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and general anesthesia.
Keeping Children Calm
Children of all ages (and adults, for that matter) can be naturally anxious or apprehensive about receiving dental treatment. We find that a “tell, show, do” philosophy helps. First, we explain the upcoming steps that will be taken in simple terminology any child will understand. We then show them how we will perform the upcoming dental work. Finally, we do the procedure. We find this is a great way to earn a child’s trust. However, this does not always work. Some children can still experience stress, anxiety, and fear. When this is the case, we can offer sedation dentistry options.
Options For Sedation Dentistry
At Triad Pediatric Dentistry, we offer the following dental sedation options:
- Nitrous Oxide: This is also referred to as laughing gas. It is a mild form of sedative that is breathed in. We administer this gas as “flavored air” to help your child be relaxed throughout their treatment. They will remain fully conscious, and because nitrous oxide has such a fast half-life, your child will come out of the anesthetic very quickly
- General Anesthesia: This is the strongest form of sedation we offer and will allow your child to sleep throughout their treatment. This is the same form of sedation that one would be under for a surgery like tonsil removal
