Greensboro dentist helps kids look forward to dental cleaning

When your family schedule is packed, taking your child to the dentist might seem like one more thing to check off your to-do list. Yet it means so much in the long term. When parents prepare for an upcoming cleaning appointment with enthusiasm and good humor, it helps kids develop a positive attitude toward dental care for life. Greensboro pediatric dentist, Dr. Sona Isharani, shares this motherly advice.

Board-certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Sona Isharani, guides parents on what to say and do to help kids look forward to dental cleaning

Set a good example

Though you might not realize it, your kids hear what you say your own dental checkups. Instead of a grumbled “Oh, darn, I have to go to the dentist tomorrow,” let them hear something like, “We need to get an early start in the morning because I have a visit scheduled with my dentist and I sure don’t want to miss it.”

Get your kids involved

  • Even small children care about how they look – think about how much they love seeing their own pictures on your phone. You might say, “Aw, look how pretty your smile is. Let’s visit Dr. Sona to keep it that way.”
  • While you certainly don’t want to denigrate anyone with an unfortunate dental condition, you might encourage your child to look forward to a cleaning to have “the sparkliest smile in class.”
  • Make planning fun. Use a special sticker (maybe a tooth) on the calendar to count down the last ten “sleeps” before appointment day.
  • Good checkups are kind of a big deal, so plan on a small but fun reward. It could be a big grin photo on Instagram, a call to Grandma with the happy news, or stopping by the drug store to pick out a new toothbrush.

Why Greensboro kids don’t mind dental cleaning

Dr. Sona and her team genuinely enjoy caring for children’s smiles, and it shows. They use Kid-friendly instruments and pleasant tasting materials. As a Board-certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Sona has background and experience in the psychology of children’s dentistry. Plus, she is a Mom herself, so she understands how you and your kids feel about going to the dentist.
